Saying Goodbye is Never Easy

Vince’s Aunt Tessie (or Sister as everyone calls her) is like a second mother to him.  When he was growing up, she took care of him when his parents were working and they even lived together for some time while he was in college and while we were dating.  She has no children of her own, so Vince was like a son to her.  Once her husband passed away about 10 years ago, it just wasn’t feasible for her to stay in the states anymore.  So, she moved back to the Phillippines where she can have a live in maid, a driver and a cook and still have money left over each month.  She has been coming back to visit every couple of years ever since she left.  She just wrapped up a month long visit here and we could definitely tell that her health has gone downhill pretty dramatically.  She told us that this was her last visit.  She can no longer make the grueling trip out to the states in her condition and because of our children, I don’t think we’ll be able to travel out there any time soon.  So, today we had one last visit with her and then we had to say our final goodbyes.  It was heartbreaking watching her and Vince embrace and cry and tell each other that they loved each other, knowing that this would be the last time they would see each other.  I’m so happy that they got one last visit in today before she had to leave.  They’ll continue to talk on the phone as much as possible, and we’ll send them pictures of us and the kids.  We’ll make the best of a sad situation.
